Emergency Medivac of Captain from MV Maple Crystal in Saldanha Bay

Aug 14, 2012 09:36

On August 12, 2012, a significant maritime emergency unfolded in the waters off Saldanha Bay when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) alerted the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Table Bay and NSRI Mykonos (Saldanha) volunteer crews. Reports indicated that the Chinese captain of the MV Maple Crystal was experiencing suspected appendicitis, requiring immediate medical evacuation. At the time, the vessel was approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Saldanha Bay, en route to Durban and set to navigate past Cape Town. In response to the emergency, a paramedical rescue unit from the Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was also mobilized. The decision was made to rendezvous off the coast of Cape Town, prompting NSRI Table Bay to deploy the rescue vessel Spirit of Vodacom at 12:35 a.m. Two EMS paramedics accompanied the volunteers as they headed towards the distressed ship. The rescue team met the MV Maple Crystal 13 nautical miles northwest of Mouille Point Lighthouse, navigating through rough seas with swells reaching 4 to 5 meters. Upon arrival, one EMS paramedic and an NSRI rescuer boarded the ship to assess the captain's condition. After stabilizing the patient, he was successfully transferred to the rescue craft. The captain was then transported to the Port of Cape Town, where an ambulance was waiting to rush him to Christiaan Barnard Hospital for further medical evaluation.
