The Nissos-Rodos: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On June 3, 2026, the Port Authority of Mytilene responded to an incident involving the ferry 'Nissos Rodos' while it was docked in the port. The vessel was preparing to depart for its scheduled routes to Chios and Piraeus when a cable became entangled in the bow thruster amidst challenging weather conditions. The entanglement necessitated the cutting of the cable, which unfortunately led to injuries for a 46-year-old cable worker, who sustained injuries to his lower extremities. Emergency services swiftly transported the injured worker to Bostanio General Hospital in Mytilene, where he received prompt first aid and was later discharged. Meanwhile, private divers were engaged to remove the cable safely, allowing for the clearance of the propulsion system. Following the issuance of a seaworthiness certificate by the relevant classification society, the ferry was granted permission to resume its operations. A preliminary investigation is currently underway by the Mytilene Central Port Authority to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In the early hours of June 28, a critical engine issue struck the ferry 'Nissos Rodos' while it was navigating the waters approximately 20 nautical miles west of Serifos. The Greek Coastguard Headquarters' Joint SAR Center (EKSED) alerted the Port Authorities of Serifos and Milos about the incident, which occurred during the vessel's scheduled route from Piraeus to Heraklion. Despite the failure of its port side main engine, the ferry managed to proceed at reduced speed and reached Heraklion, where it safely offloaded a significant number of passengers and vehicles, including 560 travelers, 164 cars, and 138 two-wheelers. Following the incident, personnel from the Local Ship Inspection Unit (TKEP) conducted a thorough inspection. The ferry was subsequently granted permission to resume its journey after presenting a class maintenance certificate from the relevant classification society.

On the night of March 12, the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) of the Greek Coast Guard alerted the Port Authorities of Piraeus, Saronic Gulf, Lavrio, Rafina, Kea, and Karystos about a passenger falling overboard from the ferry 'Nissos Rhodos.' This unfortunate event occurred while the vessel was navigating the waters between Piraeus and Karystos. At the time of the incident, the ferry was en route from Piraeus to the islands of Chios and Mytilene. Promptly, under EKSED's direction, a coordinated search operation was initiated, deploying three Coast Guard patrol boats and nearby vessels to assist in the search. Additionally, a Navy helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Efforts continued with the assistance of four Coast Guard patrol boats, several civilian ships, and aerial support from both a helicopter and an aircraft. Unfortunately, despite extensive search efforts, no traces of the missing passenger have been found thus far.

On the evening of March 28, 2023, a disturbing incident unfolded at the Port of Chios when a passenger fell overboard while disembarking from the ferry 'Nissos Rhodos'. The Port Authority promptly received reports of the fall and quickly mobilized a response team to the scene. With the cooperation of the ferry's crew, rescue efforts were successful, and the 43-year-old individual was retrieved from the water. Following the rescue, the person was taken by ambulance to the General Hospital of Chios to receive the necessary medical attention.
