Significant Maritime Collision Near Karachi: Insights and Implications
On the evening of May 28, 2026, a serious maritime incident unfolded in the waters off Karachi when the vessel 'Niwa', which was slowly progressing toward the navigation channel awaiting a pilot, collided with the container ship 'Papu' (IMO: 9377561) around 8 p.m. The collision occurred outside the Fairway Buoy in Karachi's anchorage area. The 'Niwa' was making its way from Salalah to Karachi, while the 'Papu' was heading to Jeddah after departing from the port. The impact resulted in a significant hull breach at the bow of the 'Niwa', causing severe deformation and structural damage. Complicating matters, the 'Papu' reportedly lost at least one container, with the likelihood of others being compromised as well. In response, the Karachi Port Trust sprang into action, deploying four tugs—'MT Mithadar', 'MT Kharadar', 'MT Lyari', and 'MT Keamari'—to assist in escorting the damaged vessels safely. Following the accident, the 'Niwa' was guided to berth 5 in Karachi, while the 'Papu' was instructed to anchor for inspections, remaining stationary at position 24° 38' N 066° 55' E as of June 2. Initial assessments hinted at possible negligence on the part of both vessels’ captains. The rescue operation was closely overseen by Deputy Conservator Captain Abrar Arif, Harbour Master Captain Babar Salim, and Dock Master Captain Hamid Khan Jadoon, concluding around midnight, all while port operations continued unaffected. In the wake of the collision, a joint investigation has commenced by the Karachi Port Trust and the Mercantile Marine Department. Insurance representatives will also be involved to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and evaluate the damage sustained. Notably, the 'Papu', originally named 'Main Trader' and delivered by the HDW shipyard in Kiel in 2008, was previously reported by Chinese authorities in November 2025 for 17 deficiencies, including issues with its auxiliary engine and steering gear condition. This incident highlights critical safety concerns and the need for stringent adherence to maritime regulations to prevent future accidents like this.
