Covid-19 Cases Prompt Quarantine Protocols at Gothenburg Port
On April 28, 2020, the Port of Gothenburg welcomed two vessels, both of which were linked to Covid-19 cases. One ship had a confirmed case aboard, while the other had a suspected case. In line with the port's established quarantine protocols, both vessels were isolated to ensure the safety of crew and port personnel. The Port of Gothenburg operates as a dedicated quarantine facility, equipped with a comprehensive plan to manage potential outbreaks of socially dangerous illnesses on ships. The vessel 'Njord Viking' reported a resident from southern Sweden who tested positive for Covid-19 during their voyage. Fortunately, the individual exhibited only mild, cold-like symptoms and, under the guidance of an infection control physician, was safely transported home in a rental car directly from the quay after their on-board isolation. Captain Åsa Kärnebro, the port authority, was notified of the 'Njord Viking's need for quarantine while the ship was en route through Scottish waters. Upon arrival at berth 752 in Arendal around noon, the vessel, with its crew of 14 from Sweden and Norway, was promptly quarantined per the port’s procedures. Subsequently, on April 29, the 'Njord Viking' underwent thorough decontamination before a new crew was to board. The symptom-free former crew members were cleared to return home in rental cars. Additionally, a second vessel traveling down the Göta Älv from Trollhättan docked at berth 600 in the outer ports six hours later. One individual on this ship was also isolated due to reported symptoms potentially related to Covid-19. Following medical protocols, this person was swiftly transported by pre-arranged ambulance to the hospital for testing. Thankfully, test results confirmed they were not infected with the virus. The strict adherence to quarantine measures at the Port of Gothenburg underscores its commitment to maintaining public health safety amidst the ongoing pandemic.
Viking Supply Ships Transitions Four AHTS Vessels to Norwegian Flag
Viking Supply Ships (VSS), a prominent company based in Sweden, has announced its strategic decision to flag four of its anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels under the Norwegian registry. This transition, affecting the vessels Loke Viking, Njord Viking, Magne Viking, and Brage Viking, is set to be completed within the first quarter of 2017. In an official statement released on Thursday by CO-Sea, Denmark’s largest maritime trade union, it was revealed that all fixed and long-term crew members working on these vessels will receive new employment contracts under the NOR system, replacing their existing DIS contracts. The move is aimed at consolidating fleet operations under the Norwegian flag to enhance competition in the offshore market. Furthermore, a meeting arranged by the Danish Metals & Maritime Department (DMMA) is scheduled for January 5, 2017, to discuss the specifics of this employee transition with Norwegian trade unions and Viking Supply Ships.
