NTSB Releases Findings on May 2020 Allision Involving 'Atlantic Venus' and 'Nomadic Milde'

Aug 20, 2021 11:04

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has unveiled its detailed report concerning the allision involving the bulk carrier 'Atlantic Venus', now known as 'Stella Enguri', and the vessel 'Nomadic Milde'. This incident took place on May 8, 2020, at approximately 4:55 p.m. local time, in the waters of the Lower Mississippi River just outside New Orleans. The situation unfolded as the 'Nomadic Milde', which was anchored at the time, began swinging and dragging its anchors amidst strong currents. In a critical turn of events, it collided with the 'Atlantic Venus', which was anchored directly behind it, subsequently striking a chemical dock and grounding itself on the riverbank. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries linked to the incident; however, it led to an estimated 13 gallons of lube oil spilling into the river. The financial ramifications were significant, with total damages to both vessels and the dock estimated at a staggering $16.9 million.
