Heroic Rescue at Sea: Bulk Carrier Saves Crew from Burning Longliner

Jul 11, 2017 11:16

On July 9, 2017, a dramatic maritime rescue unfolded in the Indian Ocean when the container ship "Ever Diadem", en route from Singapore to Durban, successfully rescued 16 survivors from the blazing Taiwanese tuna longliner "Hsiang Fuh 6" (IMO: BH3320). This incident occurred approximately 350 miles east of Richards Bay, just six miles away from the bulk carrier's position. The longliner was engulfed in flames, prompting all 30 crew members to abandon ship by escaping into life rafts. A coordinated rescue operation saw the bulk carrier "SBI Antares" also rescuing 14 additional castaways. By July 10, the "Ever Diadem" had anchored in Durban, with the container ship anticipated to arrive on July 12. The fire's onset led to the crew's urgent evacuation 460 miles East-North-East of Durban and 310 miles from the nearest coastline. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) played a pivotal role in coordinating the rescue efforts alongside the Maritime Rescue Co-ordinating Centre in Cape Town (MRCC CT). Reports indicate that some survivors sustained burns, with one crew member described as having serious injuries. Receiving an emergency alert at 10:05 a.m., the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) dispatched the "Eikos Rescuer II" from Durban. Accompanied by a Netcare 911 rescue paramedic, they reached the "Ever Diadem" and provided on-board treatment. One sailor, suffering from severe burns covering approximately 40% of his body, was stabilised. Another survivor, a 63-year-old Chinese crew member, received care for soft tissue injuries to his right knee. In a coordinated effort, an SA Air Force (SAAF) 15 Squadron Oryx helicopter was deployed, carrying three Netcare 911 paramedics. Upon arrival, two of the paramedics were hoisted aboard the ship to assist in stabilising the injured. Both patients were then airlifted to safety in relays using a rescue basket, with the 29-year-old Filipino sailor in serious but stable condition and the older gentleman in a stable state. They were transported to a hospital in Durban for further medical attention. The rescue operation professionally orchestrated the logistics for the repatriation of the sailors, who hailed from the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Vietnam, ensuring they would be met by their respective country representatives upon arrival in Durban. As of the afternoon of July 11, vessels were anchored outside Durban, waiting for clearance to enter. Authorities also issued a warning concerning the unmanned Taiwanese longliner, which was left adrift in the ocean.
