On June 8, 2023, Houthi militants reportedly launched attacks on multiple vessels in the waters southeast of Aden, including the British destroyer HMS 'Diamond', the cargo ship 'Norderney', and the container ship 'MSC Tavvishi'. According to Ambrey, a British maritime security firm, 'Norderney' was struck by a missile while operating approximately 83 nautical miles from Aden, though a second missile was also sighted but failed to make contact. The captain confirmed that there were no injuries among the crew members, and damage control measures were being implemented as the ship proceeded to its next destination. Meanwhile, the 'MSC Tavvishi' suffered an attack roughly 70 nautical miles southwest of Aden, where it was also hit by a missile, leading to a fire on board. Disabled Freighter Norderney Successfully Towed to Safety in Finistère

Oct 20, 2019 18:05

On October 18, 2019, at 2:20 PM, the French emergency tug 'Abeille Bourbon' departed from Brest under the directive of the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic. The tug was dispatched to the island of Batz to provide assistance to the freighter 'Norderney,' which had encountered a propulsion failure approximately 10 miles north of the island during its journey from Santander to Varberg. After the crew was unable to rectify the issue, the ship's owner entered into a private contract with the Abeilles company to tow the vessel to an anchorage in the Bay of Douarnenez. The towing operation commenced at 7:50 PM, and by the afternoon of October 19, the convoy safely reached the anchorage, where the 'Norderney' was secured at coordinates 48° 9.60' N, 004° 26.93' W. After completing necessary repairs, the freighter resumed its voyage on October 26, 2019, with an estimated time of arrival in Varberg set for 5 PM on October 29.

Norderney Detained in Tyne for Serious Safety Violations

Apr 17, 2013 08:57

On March 8, 2013, the vessel 'Norderney' faced detention in the Tyne due to a staggering number of safety discrepancies—fifteen in total—linked to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These deficiencies highlighted significant failures in compliance and effectiveness regarding safety protocols on board. Notable fire safety issues were uncovered, such as fire doors featuring open penetrations and other doors that failed to close and latch properly. Additionally, vital escape routes, including the engine room to main deck hatch, were found inoperable. Other alarming findings included a foam branch cable secured incorrectly and an emergency pump pressure gauge that hadn't been properly installed. The inspection revealed further concerns, such as the rescue boat being affixed to the wrong hook, an inoperative 10 cm radar, a leaking oil water inlet pipe, and unexpected water accumulation in the CO2 room. Further deficiencies were apparent, with insulation deficiencies noted in both the emergency generator room and the electrical locker, along with unsecured floor plates in the engine room and bow thrusters. Additionally, essential documentation such as the continuous synopsis record, radio log, and training manuals did not meet expected standards. After rectifying the issues, the 'Norderney' was ultimately released on March 11, 2013.
