On April 14, 2022, a maritime incident unfolded in the North Atlantic when the fishing vessel 'Eysturbúgvin' sank within a mere 10 minutes, approximately 100 nautical miles north-northwest of the Butt of Lewis, near the Faroe Islands. The incident occurred following a collision with its twin vessel, the 'Vesturbúgvan'. Stornoway Coastguard received an urgent satellite distress signal at 5 a.m., with no time for a standard distress call. In a remarkable display of seamanship, the 'Vesturbúgvan,' which had been fishing alongside the 'Eysturbúgvin,' swiftly rescued all seven crew members. Though shaken and in shock from the rapid events, remarkably, none of the crew were injured. The stranded fishermen were subsequently transported back to the Faroe Islands by their sister vessel, highlighting the importance of quick action in emergencies at sea.
