Engine Malfunction Strikes Nordfriesland Near Rütergat
On March 4, 2018, the 'Ernst Meier Hedde,' a lifeboat operated by the DGzRS station in Amrum, was dispatched to assist the ferry 'Nordfriesland' which encountered engine troubles off the island. At precisely 10:10 a.m., the vessel experienced a complete failure of both of its main engines in Rütergat, close to buoy 14. The ferry had a crew of nine onboard and no passengers at the time, returning from a scheduled yard stay in Husum to Wyk upon Föhr. To prevent drifting further out of the main shipping lane due to icy conditions, the 'Nordfriesland' dropped anchor. The lifeboat quickly came to the rescue and began towing the disabled ferry. After 45 tense minutes, the crew of the 'Nordfriesland' managed to resolve the engine issue, allowing the ferry to resume its journey to Dagebüll under its own power, while being escorted by the lifeboat. The 'Nordfriesland' successfully docked in Dagebüll at 2:45 p.m. For more in-depth coverage and photographs, visit: http://www.schiffsjournal.de/dgzrs-seenotretter-kommen-der-manoevrierunfaehigen-inselfaehre-nordfriesland-zu-hilfe/ and https://www.shz.de/lokales/husumer-nachrichten/maschinen-ausfall-im-eisigen-meer-id19244061.html.
Ferry Crew Member Rescued After Falling Overboard in Wyk Upon Föhr
On December 26, 2016, an incident unfolded at the port of Wyk upon Föhr when a crew member from the ferry "Nordfriesland" fell overboard during a mooring operation. The event occurred around noon, sending emergency alarms ringing throughout the vicinity. Fortunately, a fellow crew member acted swiftly, rescuing the individual who was equipped with a life vest from the chilly waters. Despite sustaining injuries after getting caught between the ferry and the dolphins of the port, the injured man remained conscious and aware. Emergency services quickly transported him via helicopter to a hospital in Flensburg for further treatment. This incident highlights the inherent risks faced by maritime workers and the importance of safety protocols in ensuring crew welfare.
Oil Spill Incident at Amrum Ferry Dock: Emergency Response Details
On the morning of July 27, 2015, the Wittdün fire rescue team on the island of Amrum responded to an urgent situation when a truck pulling a trailer from the ferry 'Nordfriesland' was involved in an incident. At approximately 9:20 a.m., the truck driver discovered a malfunction in the vehicle, leading to a significant oil spill from the hydraulic system. This mishap resulted in contamination affecting extensive areas of the ferry landing. A dedicated team of 25 volunteer firefighters sprang into action, deploying oil binders to manage the spill. However, challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and rain, hindered their cleanup efforts. The team worked tirelessly for two and a half hours to contain and dispose of the leaked oil properly. To assist in the operation, a multifunctional vehicle from Amrum Wittdün tourism and a motor sweeper were brought in. During the cleanup, the access road remained completely shut down to ensure safety. Additionally, the damaged floor conveyor, identified as type 'ZD 6', was carefully packed into a container and transported via ferry for repairs later in the afternoon.
