Nordic Bulk Carriers, a prominent Danish shipping company, is setting its sights on expanding commercial journeys through the Northwest Passage in the upcoming year. This ambitious plan follows their groundbreaking achievement last September when the Nordic Orion became the first commercial vessel to traverse this once formidable route. The Nordic Orion successfully transported 15,000 tonnes of coal from Vancouver to Finland, navigating through waters that were traditionally blocked by ice. Remarkably, the vessel completed the journey in four days less than the time it would have taken via the Panama Canal, while also accommodating approximately 25% more cargo due to deeper waterways. This innovative route not only saved Nordic Bulk Carriers about $200,000 but also resulted in a highly lucrative voyage. Christian Bonfils of Nordic Bulk Carriers expressed satisfaction with the journey: "We had a very smooth voyage and not any major delays. We’re very pleased about it,” highlighting the efficiency and potential of future shipments through this historic passage.

In a remarkable maritime achievement, the bulk carrier Nordic Orion successfully traversed the Northwest Passage, entering Baffin Bay between Sunday and Monday evenings (September 22, 2013) according to Greenwich Mean Time. The vessel, measuring 225 meters and fortified for icy conditions, was loaded with coal from British Columbia destined for Finland. This journey marks a significant milestone, as Nordic Orion is the first bulk carrier to navigate this historically challenging route that has drawn adventurers for over a century and is increasingly recognized as a viable commercial shipping pathway.
