Repairs Begin at Rio Tinto's La Baie Port Following 'Nordic Oshima' Allision
Repair operations commenced at Rio Tinto's port facilities in La Baie as efforts ramp up to restore the Duncan Wharf, which suffered significant damage from the incident involving the 'Nordic Oshima' on December 22, 2026. The vessel collided with the wharf after approaching at an excessive speed while transporting bauxite from Porto Trombetas. On May 4, 2026, a crane was delivered to the port on a barge, towed by a tug, marking the beginning of the dismantling process for the damaged infrastructure. In recent weeks, teams have been actively working to dismantle the affected sections of the wharf to secure the area and prepare for future reconstruction efforts, which are expected to continue throughout the year. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is currently conducting an investigation into the incident, categorized as a Type 3 investigation, which focuses on a limited number of safety concerns and typically concludes within 450 days. Meanwhile, the 'Nordic Oshima,' which suffered a gash in its bow, has been successfully repaired. After spending a few days in Ha! Ha! Bay, the vessel was towed to Baie-Comeau for repairs, commencing on January 13 and concluding on February 3, before it sailed to Elevsis, where it arrived on February 21.
