Wärtsilä Corporation has announced an exciting initiative to retrofit the North Sea Giant, recognized as one of the largest subsea construction vessels globally, with a cutting-edge energy storage system. This innovative upgrade aims to significantly reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs, and decrease exhaust emissions from the vessel. Cato Esperø, Director of Sales Norway at Wärtsilä, believes this project will establish a new benchmark for vessels in its category. Notably, this installation will be the first of its kind on a large offshore supply vessel, marking a pivotal step toward sustainable maritime operations.

North Sea Giant Strikes Breakwater in Peterhead, Scotland

Feb 15, 2013 11:32

In the early hours of February 6, 2013, at approximately 12:45 a.m., the offshore supply vessel 'North Sea Giant' experienced a striking incident while attempting to dock at Peterhead port, Scotland. High winds led the vessel to collide with the North Breakwater, resulting in notable damage to its hull. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or pollution from the incident. Following the collision, the 'North Sea Giant' remained anchored outside the breakwater, waiting for calmer weather that would allow for safe entry into the port. The impact caused two significant gashes, each measuring up to six meters in length, on the starboard side of the vessel. Under the challenging weather conditions, it seemed that the pilot was unable to board the vessel to facilitate a safe docking approach. Temporary repairs are currently being conducted on the vessel at Peterhead. The 'North Sea Giant' is engaged in operations under contract with Technip Norge, a subsidiary of the French oilfield services giant TechnipFMC.
