Northern Sea Wolf Delays Journey to Aid Plane Crash Response
On July 26, 2019, the ferry 'Northern Sea Wolf' encountered an unexpected delay while navigating the northern Discovery Coast Connector route, as it responded to a tragic float plane crash near Port Hardy. The incident involved a float plane operated by Seair Seaplanes, which was en route to Calvert Island. The RCMP reported receiving a distress call around 11 a.m. indicating that the aircraft had gone down close to Addenbroke Island, approximately 100 kilometers north of Port Hardy. Unfortunately, the crash claimed the lives of four individuals, while five passengers were able to survive. The ferry changed its course to assist in the emergency response due to its proximity to the crash site, along with the presence of doctors on board prepared to provide medical aid if needed. Originally scheduled to take 10 hours on the Port Hardy to Bella Coola route, with an expected arrival time of 5:30 p.m., the 'Northern Sea Wolf' ultimately reached its destination around 10 p.m. Thankfully, no additional service delays on BC Ferry routes were reported as a result of this incident. Meanwhile, the Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the plane crash.
Northern Sea Wolf Set to Launch Central Coast Ferry Service
Starting on Saturday, May 18, the Northern Sea Wolf ferry will officially commence operations on the Central Coast route, linking Bella Coola to Port Hardy, as announced by British Columbia Ferry Services Inc (BC Ferries). The news release confirms that the ferry has recently completed essential sea trials and dock fit assessments during April and May. Originally built in 2000, the Northern Sea Wolf was acquired from Greece in 2017 following the province's decision to reinstate the route, which had previously been discontinued in 2013. BC Ferries reported successful testing in various locations, including Port Hardy, Bella Bella, Bella Coola, Shearwater, and Ocean Falls, ensuring that the vessel is ready for service.
Enhancements Coming for BC Ferries' Northern Sea Wolf
BC Ferries is excited to announce that its latest addition to the fleet, the Northern Sea Wolf, is set to receive a significant upgrade at Esquimalt Drydock, commencing in December 2017 and concluding in April 2018. Located in breathtaking British Columbia, the drydock facility has secured two pivotal contracts with the ferry service. The initial contract, valued at CA$2 million (around US$1.55 million), focuses on crucial underwater component work. Additionally, BC Ferries plans to allocate approximately CA$18 million towards further enhancements involving local contractors and suppliers for interior upgrades and safety improvements. The Northern Sea Wolf is anticipated to reach British Columbia shortly after completing an impressive journey of 10,097 nautical miles from Athens, Greece. The upgrade project aims to bolster both the vessel's aesthetics and functionality, featuring comprehensive interior and exterior painting, complete overhauls of the propulsion engines and gearboxes, installation of new electrical generators, enhancements to the switchboards, provision of advanced navigational equipment, and updates to the shipboard safety systems. These improvements are poised to enhance the travel experience for passengers while ensuring top-notch safety standards on board.
