Akiba Vessel to Undergo Dry Dock Inspection in Durban Following Grounding Incident
The bulk carrier 'Akiba', which ran aground near the entrance of Maputo Harbour, has experienced significant developments since its incident. After being moored in Richards Bay since March 22, 2012, the vessel was recently towed to Durban for a scheduled dry dock inspection of its hull. The salvage efforts were facilitated by Fairmount Marine’s tug, 'Fairmount Glacier', which played a crucial role in the vessel's recovery after it encountered trouble offshore of Maputo, Mozambique. The extraction operation was carried out by the Greek salvage company, Five Oceans Salvage, under a Lloyd’s Open Form contract. The 'Fairmount Glacier' was dispatched from Cape Town to assist in the refloating process. In a strategic two-attempt recovery, the tug successfully refloated the 'Akiba' on its second attempt. Following this, the vessel was moved to a secure anchorage to assess damage before being towed to Richards Bay, where its cargo was subsequently discharged. Finally, the 'Fairmount Glacier' completed its mission by delivering the 'Akiba' safely to Durban, where further inspection and repairs will take place.
