The incident occurred near Panjurit Island, just three miles offshore from Bakauheni. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident. The ferry, which left Bakauheni at 3:15 p.m., successfully arrived at Merak Port by 6 p.m. Initial investigations suggest that the driver may have forgotten to engage the vehicle's handbrake, leading to the car's fall into the water.

Fuso Truck Accident at Bakauheni Port: Stern Ramp Failure Leads to Sea Plunge

Dec 28, 2018 12:20

On December 27, 2018, at approximately 5:50 PM, a Fuso truck tragically plunged into the waters of Bakauheni Port while attempting to board the KMP 'Nusa Putra' at Pier III. Preliminary reports suggest that the incident was precipitated by an overcapacity issue with the ferry. The stern ramp unexpectedly broke away, resulting in the truck sliding into the sea below. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape by jumping from the vehicle and was subsequently transported to Bakauhen Health Center for treatment. The KMP 'Nusa Putra' remained stationary at the quay following the incident. Court Upholds Acquittal of Santa Regina Ferry Master in Wellington Incident

Dec 09, 2014 09:12

The Court of Appeal has decided not to revisit the case of John Alexander Henderson, the master of the ferry 'Santa Regina', who was acquitted after navigating the Cook Strait with a significant gash in the vessel's hull. The incident occurred on April 26, 2011, when Henderson was berthing in Wellington and the ferry was struck by a sudden gust of wind, colliding with an unoccupied boat. Although a minor gash was initially identified and repaired, a larger 3.5-4 meter opening, approximately six meters above the waterline, went unnoticed. This included a 1.85-meter section of plating that had opened up, which the ship left with on its subsequent journey to Picton. The following morning, the gash was discovered upon the ferry's return to Wellington. Henderson faced charges for allegedly causing unnecessary danger, but he entered a plea of not guilty. During his trial at the Wellington District Court, the presiding judge exonerated Henderson, highlighting that no actual danger had ensued from the incident. The judge emphasized that the critical areas of the vessel had been sufficiently inspected. Following this ruling, the Crown sought to appeal, but the judge declined to refer legal questions to the Court of Appeal. Subsequently, the Crown appealed directly, seeking clarification on these legal matters. However, the Court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal, noting that the Crown acknowledged there was no actual risk posed to anyone due to the gash. The court concluded that pursuing the case further would serve no practical purpose and that any potential negligence on Henderson's part regarding the inspection of the damage was relatively trivial and academic. The ruling underscored that there was no public interest in reopening the case, as continuing litigation over such a minor alleged infraction would not align with the principles of just legal administration.
