Miyama Experiences Brief Grounding Due to Propulsion Failure

Mar 05, 2015 10:09

On March 4, 2015, the MV Miyama encountered serious trouble when it lost propulsion and momentarily grounded near Welch Island. The incident was attributed to a cracked cylinder, affecting the vessel carrying approximately 19,500 gallons of fuel and 23 crew members onboard. The alert was raised at 11:20 a.m. by Columbia River Pilots, prompting Coast Guard Sector Columbia River to respond promptly. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria was dispatched to assess the situation around the vessel. Efforts to refloat Miyama commenced at 1:30 p.m. during high tide, with assistance from tugs, but the initial attempt was unsuccessful. Fortunately, the vessel was able to break free approximately 20 minutes later. Following the grounding, the bulk carrier made its way to the north berth at Kalama after conducting necessary repairs on its propulsion system, accompanied by the tugs Deschutes and Sommer S. Prior to the vessel resuming its scheduled activities, inspections were performed by personnel from the NKK classification society and Coast Guard officials. The Coast Guard remained vigilant during Miyama's transit to Kalama while also investigating the underlying cause of the mechanical issue. The vessel successfully berthed at Kalama on March 5 at 9:15 a.m. For more visuals of the incident, see the following links: [Photos and Video 1](https://www.dvidshub.net/unit/USCGD13#.VPgdDsJOXcs) and [Photos and Video 2](https://www.dvidshub.net/image/1797887/miyama-repair-effort-near-welch-island#.VPgdJMJOXcs).
