Heroic Long-Distance Medical Evacuation Near San Francisco
In a remarkable operation, the U.S. Coast Guard partnered with the California Air National Guard to carry out a prolonged rescue mission that saved the life of a seriously injured 39-year-old man aboard the bulk carrier 'Ocean Applaud'. This intensive medevac effort unfolded approximately 1,300 miles west of San Francisco, commencing on August 24, 2020, when the vessel's crew alerted the 11th Coast Guard District command center about a tragic fall that left a crew member injured. With limited offshore capabilities of Coast Guard aircraft, the California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing stepped in to offer vital support. Direction was given for the 'Ocean Applaud' to head toward the shore while a strategic plan was put in place to coordinate a swift response when the vessel returned within flying range. On August 26, at around 2 p.m., the 129th Rescue Wing launched a C-130 aircraft, equipped with skilled para-rescue jumpers. By 7 p.m., they reached the vicinity of the bulk carrier. In a daring display of rescue tactics, the para-rescue jumpers executed a static-line parachute jump into the ocean, quickly boarding the 'Ocean Applaud' to deliver essential medical support to the injured man and stabilize his condition. The C-130 aircraft returned to base, leaving the para-rescue team to monitor and care for the patient for the remainder of the week. On August 28, two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters were dispatched in the morning to perform the final recovery of both the patient and the para-rescue jumpers. The patient was promptly transferred to awaiting Emergency Medical Services and subsequently transported to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, the 'Ocean Applaud' was scheduled to dock in Stockton on August 29, marking the end of a challenging ordeal at sea.
