On February 17, 2018, at precisely noon, the Norwegian vessel 'Kristine Bonnevie' encountered a critical engine failure while navigating 17 nautical miles south of Orknøyane, at coordinates 59° 15' 54" N, 001° 41' 00" W. This incident was attributed to a leaking lubricant distributor, leaving the crew of 22 unable to perform the necessary repairs at sea. The ship, which was traveling from Hanstholm and was completely unloaded, began to drift as anchoring was not feasible due to the deep waters in the area.
