On the evening of August 1, 2022, the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center received an urgent alert regarding 29 migrants stranded on a vessel that had departed from Turkey bound for Italy. The vessel was located approximately 84 nautical miles southwest of Pylos and was in dire circumstances. The research vessel 'Oceanic Sirius' swiftly responded to the call and successfully rescued the individuals on board. Following the rescue, the Oceanic Sirius navigated towards Koroni, Messinia, where the survivors were transferred to a patrol vessel for safe transportation to the port of Kalamata. The group comprised 10 men, 1 woman, and 18 minors. In the aftermath of the operation, two individuals, aged 30 and 33, were apprehended by the Central Port Authority of Kalamata on charges of illegal entry into Greece, as authorities initiated a preliminary investigation into the matter.
