On November 12, 2011, at 12:15 p.m., the cargo vessel 'Ness' encountered a rudder malfunction while navigating eastbound through the Kiel Canal, resulting in a grounding against the northern embankment. Fortunately, the tug 'Holtenau,' which was nearby and en route to Brunsbuettel, intervened by disconnecting from its tow and assisting in the rescue operation to tug 'Ness' back to safety.
