Comprehensive Mercury Survey of U-864 Wreck Near Fedje Underway
As of March 14, preparations are in full swing for the 'Olympic Triton' at Vindenes, gearing up for a detailed survey of the infamous submarine wreck 'U-864', located off the coast of Fedje. This initiative, spearheaded by the Norwegian Coastal Administration, marks a crucial step in mitigating the environmental risks posed by mercury residues still found within the wreck. This forthcoming survey builds on work executed during the 2025 expedition, aiming to enhance our understanding of both the structural integrity of the submarine and the status of any remaining mercury containers embedded in its keel. A primary focus of the upcoming mission is to evaluate innovative methods and equipment that will facilitate safer exploration of the keel section, where these hazardous mercury-containing units may be hidden. In addition to investigating the wreck itself, the project entails a comprehensive mapping of the seabed and surrounding structural conditions, which will be instrumental in guiding future decisions about remediation options. After a rigorous selection process, Reach Subsea AS has been appointed as the lead contractor for this essential project, collaborating with specialized partners including: - NIVA for environmental monitoring, - Scanmatic AS for cutting-edge instrumentation, - RenOcean AS for dredging operations. Representatives from the Norwegian Coastal Administration will be present onboard to oversee the operation, ensuring strict adherence to contractual obligations. The submarine 'U-864' continues to harbor potentially intact mercury containers, posing a significant environmental risk. Previous assessments have pointed to increased mercury levels in the vicinity of the wreck, yet uncertainties remain regarding the quantity, condition, and precise locations of the containers. The outcomes of this investigation are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the authorities' decisions regarding the future management of the wreck. This could involve removing the mercury, encasing it, or a synergistic approach involving several strategies.
