On the evening of April 10, 2017, at 7:30 PM, a maritime incident occurred when the cargo vessel 'Onego Merchant' collided with the lock infrastructure in Emden as it was departing the port. The vessel's accommodation block struck a deflector rail, leading to significant damage as the rail was torn away. This impact also caused sections of the masonry, including the light signaling system of the Binnenhauptes, to be dislodged over a wide area. As debris fell into the water, the lock was closed to maritime traffic pending an inspection by divers to assess its operational integrity. Fortunately, the Onego Merchant sustained minimal damage and was cleared to sail just three hours post-incident. The ship resumed its journey towards Hawkesbury, with an expected arrival date of April 20.
