On April 6, 2018, authorities in Pangai, Ha’apai, acted swiftly to eliminate a shipment of spoiled meat that arrived aboard the 'Otuanga’ofa' ferry from Tongatapu. The cargo, which included 62 boxes of chicken, seven boxes of salted beef, 28 boxes of hot dogs, one box of chicken wings, and two boxes of mutton flaps, was deemed unsafe for consumption due to improper refrigeration during transit. Originally, the shipments complied with health standards; however, a significant delay caused by severe weather conditions during transit from Tongatapu to Vava’u led to the perishables being stored in unrefrigerated conditions. Upon arrival in Ha’apai, the pungent odor prompted a more thorough inspection by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFFF) and the Ministry of Commerce, Consumer, Trade, Innovation and Labour (MCCTIL). Following the discovery, the authorities promptly confiscated the tainted goods, ensuring they were destroyed the same day to protect public health. The team also revisited five foreign-managed shops where these contaminated products had been sent, further solidifying their commitment to food safety in the region.

According to Radio Tonga, the new ferry struck the MV Sitka twice before successfully reaching the Queen Salote international wharf. Fortunately, all 500 passengers aboard the 'Otuanga'ofa, which had traveled from Ha’apai to Vava’u, were unharmed. However, the MV Sitka sustained significant damage, with initial assessments estimating repair costs exceeding $50,000. Sefo Nginingini, the general manager of the shipping company, expressed concern over the potential repercussions of the accident on his staff, as the disruption in service will affect their wages. The MV 'Otuanga'ofa was introduced as a replacement for the ill-fated ferry Ashika, which tragically sank in 2009, claiming the lives of 74 individuals.
