On April 25 at 6:30 PM, the dedicated volunteers of the NSRI Richards Bay were called into action by the Transnet National Ports Authority. They received an urgent request for medical assistance from the Panamax Nereid, which was anchored offshore. A 45-year-old Filipino crew member was suspected to be experiencing a heart attack. The vessel had previously sailed from Madagascar and was heading towards the Port of Richards Bay. In response to the emergency, the rescue vessel Spirit of Richards Bay was deployed, accompanied by paramedics from Netcare 911. Upon reaching the site, an NSRI rescuer boarded the ship to assess the patient's condition, which initially appeared stable. The crewman was secured in a Stokes basket stretcher and carefully lowered onto the sea rescue craft, where the Netcare 911 paramedics continued medical treatment during the journey to the NSRI station. Despite ongoing efforts and the patient still seeming stable, the man tragically passed away while being transported to the hospital. The exact cause of death remains undetermined, and an investigation is currently underway by the relevant authorities.
