Coast Guard Responds to Oil Spill Incident Involving Hafnia Rhine in New Orleans

Jul 31, 2022 19:11

On July 28, 2022, at approximately 6:10 p.m., the US Coast Guard's New Orleans sector was alerted to an oil discharge incident involving the 'Hafnia Rhine' during a fueling operation at Ama Anchorage, situated at mile marker 115 on the lower Mississippi River, near Kenner, Louisiana. Upon receiving the notification, watchstanders promptly deployed USCG pollution responders to assess the situation. The crew of the 'Hafnia Rhine' successfully contained the oil spill, but preliminary evaluations by Sector New Orleans pollution investigators estimated that around 2,100 gallons of fuel oil had entered the water, affecting approximately 50 to 60 barges in the vicinity. To remediate the environmental impact, the National Response Corporation and Environmental Safety and Health Consulting Services were contracted as oil spill removal organizations. They have installed 2,700 feet of containment boom and 3,320 feet of sorbent boom around the affected vessels, employing sorbents to recover the spilled oil. The investigation into the cause of the discharge remains ongoing. As of August 1, the 'Hafnia Rhine' was still moored at coordinates 29° 57.54' N, 090° 17.95' W. Caution Urged for Singapore-Registered Vessels in Saudi Waters Following BW Rhine Explosion

Dec 21, 2020 10:46

Singapore-registered ships operating in and around Saudi Arabia are advised to exercise heightened vigilance in light of a recent attack on the BW Rhine. This incident occurred while the tanker was docked for discharge operations at a port, where it was struck by an explosive-laden boat, prompting serious safety concerns. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has issued a strong advisory emphasizing the need for all vessels in the region to implement necessary precautions. The explosion led to a fire aboard the BW Rhine, which was promptly extinguished by the diligent efforts of the crew, supported by local fire brigade and tug boats. Initial reports indicate that the explosion resulted in hull damage to a water ballast tank and a cargo tank, with evaluations of the damage ongoing. Fortunately, no pollution incidents have been reported from this event. At the time of the explosion, the vessel was carrying 22 crew members, all of whom were reported safe. The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed the attack involved an explosive-laden vessel, and the MPA is currently collaborating with the shipping company, Hafnia, to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the event. Hafnia representatives stated that determining the cause of the explosion will be the responsibility of appropriate authorities, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring the safety of their personnel and the integrity of the vessel. The BW Rhine had recently loaded approximately 60,000 tonnes of gasoline at Yanbu port on December 6 and was reported to be 84 percent full, according to its draft. The MPA has reminded all Singapore-registered ships to adhere to guidelines from relevant port authorities as they navigate these challenging waters.

Arab Nations Stand United Against Attacks on Tankers in Jeddah

Dec 15, 2020 12:41

In a united front, Arab nations have voiced strong condemnation following the recent attack on the tanker 'BW Rhine' at Jeddah port. The incident involved a small boat laden with explosives targeting the vessel, which was transporting 60,000 tons of gasoline. This hostile act resulted in an explosion and fire on board, although thankfully, the crew managed to extinguish the flames without any casualties. However, there was damage to the ship's hull. Kuwait took a firm stance against the attack, highlighting that the frequency of such terrorist acts against Saudi Arabia poses a threat to regional stability and the uninterrupted flow of global energy supplies. Concurrently, Jordan expressed similar sentiments, labeling the assault a "cowardly terrorist act" targeting vital Saudi installations. Ambassador Dhaifallah Al-Fayez, spokesperson for Jordan's Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs, asserted Jordan's unwavering support for Saudi Arabia amidst threats to its security and the safety of its citizens. Bahrain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the terrorist attack, emphasizing its detrimental effects on maritime safety and security. Meanwhile, Lebanon expressed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia, denouncing the assault through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates. On December 14, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation labeled this attack as further evidence of terrorist groups striving to destabilize the region. Complicating matters, another tanker experienced an explosion at the main anchorage of Jeddah port, though the specific identity of the vessel remained unclear initially. Preliminary reports from Dryad suggested that it might involve either the UAE-owned 100,000 dwt crude tanker 'Desert Rose' or the Saudi-flagged bunkering tanker 'Al Amal Al Saudi', both of which were anchored off Jeddah and transmitting AIS signals on the evening of December 13.
