Working Conditions Aboard the Petro-Giant

On May 17, 2018, a maritime incident occurred in Esbjerg when the coaster 'Fluvius Tavy', arriving from Emden, collided with the drilling rig 'Maersk Giant'. As the vessel navigated towards the port, it is believed that an outgoing current caused it to lose control, leading to a sideway drift into the rig. Fortunately, the allision resulted in only minor damage. At the time of the incident, 'Maersk Giant' was positioned alongside two additional rigs at Dogger Quay, outside the dockyard. On January 14, 2015, the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) initiated a thorough investigation into a lifeboat incident involving the Mærsk Giant, a mobile drilling facility stationed in the Yme field of the southern North Sea. The incident occurred during routine testing of the lifeboat systems when one of the conventional lifeboats was unintentionally lowered into the sea. This lifeboat subsequently drifted beneath the facility after experiencing wear on its lowering wire rope. Fortunately, there were no personnel aboard the lifeboat at the time of this occurrence. The lifeboat, now adrift, was closely monitored by an emergency vessel. The PSA expressed significant concern regarding the incident, prompting them to conduct a detailed inquiry aimed at unraveling the chain of events, identifying both immediate and underlying causes, evaluating actual and potential consequences, and detecting any violations of safety regulations. The aim of this investigation is to foster learning and enhance safety practices to prevent similar occurrences in the future. At present, the Mærsk Giant is utilized by Talisman Energy Norge AS as living quarters while preparations for the removal of the Yme facility are underway, with consent granted by the PSA.

On September 21 at 6 a.m., the 'Mærsk Giant' made its long-awaited exit from Hirtshals, assisted by four tugboats. The rig is bound for the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, marking the end of an unexpected week-long delay caused by severe weather conditions. Despite being completed ten days ahead of schedule, the rig found itself docked in Hirtshals since June 28 for extensive overhauls and upgrades costing Maersk Drilling an impressive 400 million Euros. This significant investment has not only modernized the rig but also extended its operational lifespan by a remarkable decade. The 'Mærsk Giant' is slated to continue its drilling contracts in the North Sea until 2014, ensuring a busy future ahead.
