Buoy Lighthouse Vessel Deploys Following Container Incident in Pentland Firth
On October 31, 2020, a cargo ship lost several containers during a severe storm in the Pentland Firth, leading to their discovery on the shores of Hoy. Local farmer Harvey Seatter encountered two 40-foot containers while tending to his sheep at Melsetter; he first spotted them floating in the sea and later witnessed them being pushed onto the shore as the tide receded. In response to the incident, a Coastguard tug has been stationed as a guard vessel in the area, with the Northern Lighthouse Board providing additional support in the ongoing search operation. The 'Pharos' is scheduled to assume guard vessel responsibilities from the tug on November 1. Furthermore, a Coastguard aircraft has been actively conducting aerial overflights of the region.
