Wave of Attacks Near Nipa Anchorage Raises Concerns
In a troubling turn of events, maritime security concerns are on the rise as a series of theft attempts have occurred in the waters just south of Singapore. Over a span of 24 hours, three separate incidents of attempted robbery took place near Nipa Anchorage, involving the bulk carrier 'Ore Vitoria', the Malaysian-flagged tugboat 'Kien San 1' towing the barge 'Kien San 8', and the vessel 'Eastern Star', which was making its voyage from Port Klang to Jakarta. The incidents unfolded between May 28 and May 20, 2014, with the first reported at 6:25 a.m., followed by a second at 10:42 a.m. and a third at 3:53 a.m. During the assaults, a group of four men managed to board the 'Ore Vitoria' while it was underway southwest of Nipa Anchorage. Fortunately, nothing was taken, and the ship's crew remained unharmed. Following the boarding, the ship's master conducted a thorough vessel search, ensuring that the intruders had fled without incident. In a similar fashion, the tugboat 'Kien San 1', along with the associated barge 'Kien San 8', was targeted. The crew on the barge attempted to frighten the intruders away, successfully preventing any thefts. The Singapore Police Coast Guard responded promptly by deploying a patrol craft to the area, yet the perpetrators escaped in small boats. The 'Eastern Star' also faced an attack, where the four men boarded from the stern and proceeded to the engine room. As with the previous incidents, the crew was unharmed, and nothing was reported missing after the master's search. The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) has speculated that the robbers may have been operating in a systematic manner, moving from one vessel to another in the area due to the strikingly similar methods observed across the incidents. However, ReCAAP emphasized that there is currently no conclusive evidence linking the same group to all three attacks. Maritime operators in the region are urged to remain vigilant and enhance their security protocols to prevent potential future incidents.
