Pietro-Novelli Ship Details and Seafarer Feedback

In a significant move to alleviate the overcrowding in migrant reception centers, the Ministry of the Interior has secured the ferry 'Pietro Novelli' for regular operations. This vessel will operate three times weekly, transporting migrants from Lampedusa, with a focus on mitigating the pressure in local facilities. The 'Pietro Novelli' is scheduled to provide services throughout August and September. Each journey is expected to carry up to 500 individuals. The ferry's inaugural voyage commenced on July 28, 2022, with the transfer of 200 migrants, who were escorted by police from the Imbriacola district to Mazara del Vallo. Alongside the 'Pietro Novelli', the Coast Guard's 'Diciotti' is also stationed in Lampedusa to assist in the transfer of an additional 600 migrants. The Prefecture of Agrigento is collaborating closely with the Interior Ministry to expedite the urgent transfer plan.
