Pirika Mosiri Maru: New Coal Carrier for Hokkaido Electric Power Co.
On January 23, 2019, a state-of-the-art coal carrier, Pirika Mosiri Maru, was officially delivered by Oshima Shipbuilding, located in Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture. This impressive 89,372 dwt vessel will be utilized by the reputable Japanese shipping company NYK to transport coal for Hokkaido Electric Power Co. Inc. (HEPCO). As the latest addition to HEPCO’s fleet, Pirika Mosiri Maru represents the third generation of coal carriers for the company, following the legacy of the first-generation Sapporo Maru, which debuted in 1984 as HEPCO's inaugural coal transport vessel. Additionally, it succeeds the second ship, Shin Sapporo Maru, which was launched in 2002 and served the company for many years. This new build marks a significant evolution in HEPCO's coal transportation capabilities.
