Historic Convoy Makes Way for Barents Sea After Extended Icy Standstill
In December 2021, the icebreaker 'Arktika' bravely ventured into the densely packed sea-ice of the Laptev Sea, embarking on a significant journey across several thousand kilometers to reach Pevek. This marked the first expedition into eastern Arctic waters for the newly commissioned icebreaker. Accompanying the 'Arktika' were three vessels: the 'Polar King', 'Inzhener Rubin', and the diesel-powered icebreaker 'Dikson'. Upon arrival in Pevek, these cargo vessels offloaded vital construction materials destined for the Baymskaya copper mining project, only to be subsequently captured by the surrounding sea-ice in the local harbor. It wasn't until February 9, 2022, that the 'Arktika' returned to the region, initiating a comprehensive escort operation spanning thousands of kilometers across the Northern Sea Route. This effort aims to lay the groundwork for upcoming year-round convoys on this vital maritime pathway. By February 15, progress was steady, as the convoy approached the Vilkitsky Strait, the natural divider between the Laptev Sea and the Kara Sea. The convoy, besides the 'Arktika' and the two cargo ships, also featured the nuclear-powered container ship 'Sevmorput'. Notably, this vessel had previously traversed the Russian Arctic route in November 2021, carrying essential equipment and metal structures for a nuclear power plant currently under construction in Bangladesh. After departing Vladivostok on January 17, the 'Sevmorput' has now begun its journey back toward Murmansk. Throughout this voyage, the convoy has been challenged by sea-ice thickness exceeding two meters in various sections. However, expectations are high that the convoy will successfully reach the Barents Sea by late February, marking a significant achievement in Arctic navigation.
