Heroic Rescue at Sea: Cook and Colleague Saved After Falling Overboard

Apr 17, 2017 16:38

In a dramatic incident off the coast of Bornholm, a 50-year-old Russian cook fell overboard from the vessel 'Prima Donna' on April 16, 2017, at approximately 8:51 p.m. The ship was located four miles east of Simrishamn when the unfortunate accident occurred. Despite the crew's quick action, initial attempts to retrieve the man were unsuccessful. Demonstrating incredible bravery and selflessness, Atnon Tasanen, a Finnish crew member, donned a survival suit and leapt into the frigid waters in an effort to save his colleague. After swimming for about 15-20 minutes, Tasanen reached the cook, who appeared unresponsive after being submerged for over an hour and a half. Grabbing hold of his colleague, Tasanen faced tremendous challenges, suffering seven broken ribs and two cracked ribs in the process, as the cook weighed around 120 kilograms compared to Tasanen's 75 kilograms. The valiant rescue operation was bolstered when both men were eventually airlifted from the water at 10 p.m. by the rescue helicopter HKP 003. Additionally, a rescue boat from Skillinge and a helicopter from Ronneby played vital roles in the search and rescue efforts. Both crew members were transported to Blekinge Hospital in Karlskrona, arriving at approximately 10:30 p.m. Fortunately, after a perilous night, the cook was found unconscious but alive, showcasing the significance of quick-thinking actions in critical maritime emergencies.

Nedland Grounds Near Gothenburg: A Maritime Incident on December 4, 2012

Dec 04, 2012 22:43

On December 4, 2012, the cargo vessel Nedland found itself in a precarious situation after running aground in the Böttö fairway off Gothenburg while en route from Lidköping to Nyköping. The incident began when the Nedland anchored north of Rivö to refuel from a bunker tanker. Unfortunately, before the two vessels could establish a connection, the Nedland began to drift westward towards the fairway. In a bid to rectify the situation, the crew attempted to raise the anchor but were unsuccessful, leading the freighter to continue dragging and ultimately come to rest far off the fairway, northwest of Rivö. Emergency services were quickly alerted, with a tugboat and pilot dispatched to assist. Concurrently, the crew of the Nedland pumped water from its ballast tanks to improve stability as the situation started to stabilize. After successfully retrieving the anchor, the vessel was able to slide off the shoal. By midday, the Nedland was anchored once again, awaiting representatives from the Transport Agency for a thorough damage inspection, while divers were also slated to examine the hull for any potential issues.
