The research vessel 'Prince Madog' has made a significant archaeological discovery by locating the wreck of the British merchant ship SS 'Mesaba.' This vessel is historically notable for its role in transmitting a vital iceberg warning to the RMS 'Titanic' on April 15, 1912, during its ill-fated voyage across the Atlantic. While the 'Titanic' received the message, it unfortunately never reached the ship's command center. Tragically, later that fateful night, the 'Titanic' collided with an iceberg, leading to its catastrophic sinking. The SS 'Mesaba' itself met a grim fate when it was torpedoed by a German submarine during World War I in 1918, resulting in the loss of 20 lives, including the ship's captain. For over a century, the exact location of the 'Mesaba' wreck remained a mystery. However, thanks to advancements in multibeam sonar technology, scientists have successfully pinpointed its location. The study was spearheaded by Michael Roberts, a maritime geoscientist at Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences in Wales. This discovery not only adds a new chapter to maritime history but also sheds light on the events leading up to one of the most notorious maritime disasters of all time.

The Prince Madog, a research vessel operated by P&O Maritime, has recently completed an extensive 37-day charter project in collaboration with Osiris Projects. This initiative involved conducting crucial surveys at the proposed North St. George's Channel Marine Conservation Zone located in the Irish Sea. The endeavor was commissioned by the U.K. Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Notably, this project marked the Prince Madog's inaugural hydrographic survey using the state-of-the-art RESON 7125 multi-beam echo-sounder system, which was recently installed. The data collected will play an essential role in informing environmental policies and conservation efforts in the region.
