On November 7, 2017, at approximately 9 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Altenavi' experienced a significant incident in the Venice lagoon when it allided with an under-construction dam while departing from the Marghera port. Having left the Azozo Quay around 8 a.m., the ship navigated through the Petroli Canal and was nearing the exit of the port sector, bordered by the dams of Alberoni and Santa Maria del Mare. At the time of the accident, the 'Altenavi' was operating in ballast condition after completing the offloading of a cargo of cereals at Marghera. As it attempted to exit, the ship unexpectedly veered to the starboard side and struck the crescent-shaped dike designed to protect the future movable dams of the Mose project. Wind conditions in the area were approximately 40 km/h, accompanied by an easterly swell. The impact resulted in damage to the bow and underwater foreship, leading to water ingress on the vessel. Following the allision, the captain promptly requested assistance, prompting the deployment of three tugs: 'Elma C', 'Marina MC', and 'Angelina C'. The tugs successfully maneuvered the 'Altenavi' to the center of the basin and then escorted it to San Marco Basin. At around noon, the more powerful tug, 'Elma C', joined the convoy heading toward the Petroli Canal. By 3:30 p.m., the 'Altenavi' was safely brought back to Porto Marghera and secured at the Venice Commercial Terminals on the northern quay of the North Industrial Channel.
