Greenpeace Protests Lead to Temporary Stop of Gas Well Construction Near Borkum
In a significant legal development, the highest court in the Netherlands has placed a temporary halt on the construction of a gas well near Borkum, effective June 4, 2024. This decision comes in the wake of protests conducted by Greenpeace on the drilling platform. The German Environmental Aid (DUH), in coalition with various partner organizations, had filed an urgent motion opposing the drilling plans, which the court subsequently approved. A full verdict is anticipated next week following a scheduled hearing. The DUH claims that energy company One-Dyas, in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, has tried to bypass a previous court-imposed construction freeze by altering its permit's specifications. On May 29, the Dutch Ministry greenlighted the contentious venture after One-Dyas modified the environmental criteria for the construction, supposedly in line with the earlier judicial ruling. On the night of June 3, One-Dyas had transported the drilling platform 'Prospector 1' to the designated site northwest of Borkum, preparing to initiate natural gas extraction operations. However, early on June 4, Greenpeace activists took action, securing themselves to the platform and effectively halting any preparatory work from proceeding. While One-Dyas expressed surprise over the protest, the company stated its commitment to ensuring the safety of both the activists and the crew involved. Despite the disruption, One-Dyas remains determined to commence natural gas production by the end of this year.
