On the morning of April 7, 2019, the cable laying vessel Cable Enterprise was involved in an oil pollution incident at the new Southern lock in Brunsbüttel. A technical malfunction of its engine resulted in oil products leaking into the water, with the pollution first noticed at 7 a.m. The spill covered an area measuring 50 by 10 meters within the lock, while additional tar balls were discovered floating in the inner port over an area of 30 square meters.
