Former Elbe Ferry Grete Now Qajaq W on Route to IJmuiden
The once well-known Elbe ferry, now rebranded as 'Qajaq W', is making its way to IJmuiden after undergoing significant refurbishment at Fiskerstrand Yard. This transformation has seen the vessel re-registered under the flag of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, marking a new chapter in its maritime journey. After departing from Norwegian waters, the Qajaq W is anticipated to arrive in IJmuiden on December 24 at 7 a.m., allowing for an exciting arrival in the Dutch port.
Modern Ferries to Transform Labrador Coast Service
In a significant upgrade to marine transportation, two state-of-the-art ferries are set to enhance service along the Labrador coast starting March 2019. The provincial government has inked a massive multiyear agreement worth $362 million with the Woodward Group of Labrador to introduce the ice-class 1A vessels, 'Grete' and 'Hiiumaa'. Designed specifically for the challenges of northern climates, these new ferries will replace the aging 'Astron', which has been in service for 47 years, and the 'Apollo', which is 48 years old. The 'Grete' will operate on the North Coast route, while the 'Hiiumaa' is designated for the Strait of Belle Isle service. Notably, both vessels will undergo a renaming process before entering operational service. One of the highlights of these ships is their commitment to accessibility; they will be fully equipped for passengers with disabilities, in addition to providing heated kennel areas for pets. Focusing on capacity improvements, the 'Hiiumaa' will accommodate 300 passengers and feature two vehicle decks that can hold 120 vehicles, along with eight tractor trailers—a notable upgrade from the 'Apollo', which previously managed 240 passengers, with space for only 80 vehicles and six tractor trailers. On the North Coast, the 'Grete' will significantly increase capacity to 140 passengers, providing overnight accommodations for up to 80 travelers, including two wheelchair-accessible cabins. It will also allow for the transport of at least 20 vehicles and 125 cargo units, substantially bettering the current situation with the 'Northern Ranger' and 'Astron', which supported only 131 passengers, had no vehicle capacity, and managed 110 cargo units. Not only will the new ferries enhance passenger experience, but they will also reduce the turnaround time for the North Coast run from the current 14 days down to a streamlined seven days, paving the way for more efficient travel in the region.
Ex-Elbe Ferry 'Grete' Sets Course for Norway for Major Refurbishment
The former Elbe ferry, 'Grete', has relocated her homeport to Majuro while currently docked in Wewelsfleth. On September 6, the vessel is scheduled to depart for Fiskerstrand Verft in Aalesund, where she will undergo extensive preparations for an upcoming service with Labrador Marine, operating the route from Blanc Sablon to St. Barbe.
