Collision in the Sunda Strait: Chinese Vessel Involved in Ferry Accident
Early on May 3, 2014, at approximately 2:25 a.m., the cargo ship 'Qi Hang' was involved in a significant maritime incident, colliding with the ferry 'Marisa Nusantara' in the Sunda Strait, which lies between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The collision occurred on the starboard side of the ferry while it was en route from Merak to Bakauheni, situated merely 2.2 miles away from the Port of Bakauheni in South Lampung. The impact was severe, ripping open a section of the ferry measuring 5 meters wide and 7 meters long, causing it to tilt about 30 degrees to port and suffering considerable water ingress. The collision resulted in chaos onboard, with some passengers sustaining injuries due to the sudden impact while others were thrown around, suffering from shock. The ferry was carrying 75 passengers along with 47 vehicles, which included cars, motorcycles, buses, and trucks. Despite the damage, 'Marisa Nusantara' managed to make its way to Bakauheni port under its own power, aided by escorts, and successfully docked at jetty 5. Following the incident, the 'Qi Hang' made a hasty departure from the scene at 3:00 a.m. In response, four Indonesian Navy warships, along with five patrol boats, including 'KN Sarotama', 'KN Trisula', 'KN Pedang 205', 'KN Alugara', and 'KN 203' from the Coast Guard, launched a pursuit of the fleeing vessel. However, reports indicated that by May 4, 'Qi Hang' had reached the South China Sea and was on its way to Taiwan, eluding the efforts of the Indonesian authorities.
