Mechanical Failure Strands Passengers as 'Queen of Coquitlam' Towed to Safety

Apr 22, 2025 13:30

On April 21, 2025, at 1 p.m., the 'Queen of Coquitlam' experienced a mechanical breakdown near the Langdale Terminal, prompting a swift response from the tug 'Osprey' (IMO: 9623128), which assisted the ferry into Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. The towing operation lasted approximately 40 minutes, resulting in significant disruptions on the heavily utilized Langdale-Horseshoe Bay corridor. As a result, ferry services were halted, leaving numerous passengers in limbo for about three hours as several sailings were canceled. By 3:30 p.m., affected passengers and their vehicles had been safely off-loaded. BC Ferries confirmed that the technical issue, linked to pitch control, was resolved by 2:20 p.m. Subsequently, the ferry was slated for sea trials with the tug by its side, pending final approval from Transport Canada to resume normal operations. Plans were in place to restart sailings with a 4:20 p.m. departure from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. To alleviate passenger inconveniences from the canceled sailings, BC Ferries enlisted three 12-person water taxis to provide shuttle services for travelers who had planned to board on the affected routes. Ultimately, two round-trip sailings between the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver were canceled amidst the chaos. Service Disruptions on B.C. Ferries Due to Crew Shortages

May 31, 2022 11:09

A significant crew shortage impacted ferry operations on the 'Queen of Coquitlam,' leading to the cancellation of key sailings on May 29, 2022. The 5:25 p.m. service from Departure Bay, Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver, was called off, along with the 7:30 p.m. return trip. Earlier in the day, the route had already been disrupted due to insufficient staffing. B.C. Ferries alerted passengers through social media channels, indicating that the 11:15 a.m. departure from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay would experience delays. Fortunately, a replacement crew member was located, allowing the ferry to eventually depart nearly an hour late. Additionally, baggage services on the Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay route were temporarily suspended on the same Sunday because of the ongoing crew shortage.

BC Ferry Service Adjustments Following Queen of Coquitlam Technical Issues

Jun 26, 2019 18:26

Significant changes to the BC Ferry timetable have been announced for June 25 and 26, 2019, as the vessel 'Queen of Coquitlam' faces unexpected mechanical issues that necessitated her removal from service. In the interim, the 'Queen of Surrey' will step in, offering a revised sailing schedule to accommodate travelers. Morning sailings will remain unaffected since 'Queen of Surrey' already handles those routes. However, passengers should anticipate alterations to the afternoon schedules during this period. The team is optimistic that the 'Queen of Coquitlam' will resume operations by June 27, ensuring regular service is restored promptly.
