Jolly Cobalto: The Newest Giant in Ro-Ro Shipping Delivered to Ignazio Messina & Co

Mar 02, 2015 21:45

In an exciting development for the global shipping industry, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding in Jinhae, South Korea, has successfully delivered the Jolly Cobalto, a state-of-the-art ro-ro container vessel, to the renowned Italian shipping firm Ignazio Messina & Co. This impressive ship, which Messina claims to be the largest of its kind in the world, is set to fly the Italian flag and embark on its inaugural journey carrying ro-ro cargo to Europe. Following its maiden voyage, the Jolly Cobalto will enter regular service, connecting Mediterranean ports to the Red Sea and destinations in the Middle East. The Jolly Cobalto is part of a notable series of ro-ro container vessels, which includes its sister ship, Jolly Titanio, delivered in November 2014. These vessels mark a significant phase in Messina's expansive USD 500 million development plan, which aims to enhance the company's fleet capabilities. Alongside the Jolly Cobalto and Jolly Titanio, the Jolly Vanadio and Jolly Palladio will also be delivered by mid-2015, adding to Messina’s impressive lineup. Previously, Messina had engaged Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering to construct a set of four vessels that commenced operations in early 2012, further solidifying the company’s strong presence in maritime transport. With dimensions of 240 meters in length and 37.50 meters in width, the Jolly Cobalto boasts a remarkable capacity of 3,900 TEUs and can accommodate 6,350 lane-metres of ro-ro cargo. This vessel is designed for an impressive service speed of 21.5 knots and features a cutting-edge scrubber system, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations by controlling exhaust emissions within Emission Control Areas (ECAs). The Italian classification authority, RINA, has awarded the ship the Greenplus certification, underscoring its commitment to eco-friendly operations.
