Fugro Saltire Mobilizes to Address Fuel Leak from Oleg Naydenov Wreck
The offshore support vessel "Fugro Saltire," equipped with two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), has arrived at Puerto de la Luz on May 9, 2023, to tackle the environmental concerns stemming from the Russian fishing trawler "Oleg Naydenov." This trawler sank approximately 24 kilometers off Punta Maspalomas, leading to fuel leaks through eight cracks in its hull. Commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works, the Norwegian company Otech employed the "Fugro Saltire" to conduct the crucial repair operation. The endeavor, set to commence this week, presents significant challenges due to the wreck's depth of around 2,700 meters, making it difficult to estimate the duration of the project. Preliminary assessments will first ascertain how much of the 1,409 tons of bunker fuel remains within the submerged vessel, 24 days following its sinking. Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions on May 9 delayed the start of the repairs. Meanwhile, the support vessels "Luz de Mar" and "Miguel de Cervantes" have been actively engaged in recovering residual oil in the area to mitigate any environmental impact.
