Rhea Leader Vehicle Carrier Performs Heroic Rescue of 37 Migrants in the Mediterranean
On January 19, 2024, at approximately noon, the Port Authority of Paleochora received an emergency report regarding the remarkable rescue of 37 migrants aboard a wooden vessel. This courageous act was carried out by the 'Rhea Leader', a vehicles carrier operating 55 nautical miles south of Paleochora. After the successful rescue operation, the vessel navigated to the western anchorage of Paleochora, where the migrants were safely transferred to a patrol boat. They were subsequently taken to the 'Tigani' port of Paleochora, and from there, arrangements were made for their temporary shelter at a facility provided by the Municipality of Chania. In addition, a preliminary investigation has been initiated by the Central Port Authority of Chania, and the wooden boat involved in the incident has been confiscated.
