On December 16, 2021, at approximately 8 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Mario Theo' played a vital role in an arduous rescue operation that saved 105 migrants stranded in a canoe-type vessel. The dramatic scene unfolded 160 miles off the coast of Nouadhibou and was first identified by the sailboat 'Cinnamon', located about 440 miles southwest of Gran Canaria. Initially, concerns for the migrants’ safety prompted a rapid response from the patrol boat 'Rio Segura', which was conducting maritime surveillance in Mauritanian waters and was in close proximity to the distressed vessel. Upon arrival, the 'Rio Segura' confirmed the situation and allowed 'Mario Theo', which took over the support role from the 'Cinnamon' as it headed to Aveiro, to continue its journey. On December 19, the migrants were disembarked at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife after a 36-hour journey. Tragically, one individual required a stretcher for disembarkation. Once ashore, they received immediate medical attention from the Red Cross and the Canary Islands Emergency Service, with two migrants being hospitalized at Hospital La Candelaria due to dehydration complications, and another transferred to the University Hospital for further treatment.
