Intense Search Operation Underway for Missing Syrian Seafarer at Rosia Bay

Mar 11, 2015 10:30

Authorities are actively searching the shores of Rosia Bay for a Syrian seafarer who jumped from the cargo vessel Rising Falcon and has been unaccounted for since last Saturday. As of yesterday, police officers have been scouring the coastline in hopes of uncovering any signs of the missing crew member. Earlier in the operation, another Syrian seafarer from the same vessel was successfully rescued by a police launch shortly after midnight last weekend. This individual was discovered clinging to life near the South Mole and was immediately brought ashore where he exhibited signs of shock, hypothermia, and several scrapes. He received medical attention at St Bernardโ€™s Hospital but was subsequently detained for illegally entering the area. Initially perceived as stowaways, both seafarers were later identified as genuine crewmen aboard the Rising Falcon, which is currently anchored off Camp Bay. Despite extensive search efforts led by the Gibraltar Port Authority, hopes of locating the missing seafarer have diminished as there have been no leads or sightings reported since the incident. While the survivor was poised to face charges and undergo deportation proceedings, he was ultimately allowed to board a second vessel belonging to the same company after receiving a caution. This situation has heightened interest in maritime safety and the challenges faced by seafarers navigating international waters.
