Incident Involving Rix Eleonora and Fairway Buoy on the Elbe River
On November 27, 2016, at approximately 6 p.m., the vessel 'Rix Eleonora', while on its journey from Vierow to England, encountered a serious navigational incident. Shortly after departing from the large Southern lock of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel and heading west, the ship deviated unexpectedly off its intended route. In a pivotal moment, it collided with a fairway buoy located on the Elbe fairway, which rendered the vessel unmanageable. This incident caused the 'Rix Eleonora' to drift aimlessly on the Elbe River. The multi-purpose vessel 'Neuwerk' was the first to respond and assist. Subsequently, tugs 'Wal' and 'Parat' were deployed to help tow the 'Rix Eleonora' to a safe anchorage at Brunsbüttel roads. Preliminary assessments indicated possible damage to the propeller and rudder as a result of the collision with the buoy. In the wake of the incident, the police boat 'Bürgermeister Brauer' was dispatched to carry out an investigation. After thorough checks, the 'Rix Eleonora' was cleared and resumed its journey off Wangerooge at approximately 7 a.m. on November 29, 2016, cruising at a speed of seven knots.
