On March 22, 2020, at 6:30 PM, the bulk carrier 'Rix Plato' encountered significant engine issues while approaching the entrance of Tangiers Med for pilot boarding. The main engine began exhibiting abnormal exhaust characteristics, including excessive black smoke and elevated temperatures, with troubles reportedly stemming from the ME cylinder No. 8. A local surveyor was summoned to assess the situation onboard. Prior to the surveyor's arrival, the engine crew had initiated an overhaul of the compromised cylinder. After thorough investigation, the chief engineer discovered an alarming amount of lubricating oil within main engine cylinder No. 8. Upon removal of the cylinder head, it became evident that the piston head had sustained severe damage. The crew worked diligently to repair the engine, allowing the vessel to set sail for Algeciras on March 27. However, shortly before departing Tangiers, another issue arose with the main engine, yet the vessel managed to proceed under its own power to Algeciras. It successfully docked at the Cernaval Group Shipyard on March 30, where technicians opened the main engine for inspection. They identified damage to the crankshaft at the big-end journal of cylinder No. 8, with shipyard measurements indicating it was beyond repair. In light of this discovery, the owners sought independent evaluations. The Rix Plato finally departed the port on April 7 at 6:40 PM and arrived at Bolderaya Shipyard in Riga on April 25 at 4:40 PM for further repairs.
