Significant Triple Collision Reported Near Spurn Point

Mar 02, 2018 10:25

On March 1, 2018, at 05:30 a.m., a maritime incident involving three vessels unfolded near Spurn Point, approximately 3.6 nautical miles offshore. The 'Celtic Spirit,' carrying a crew of eight and sailing in ballast towards Hull, lost its anchor in coordinates 053 35 56N, 000 00 57.06E. Before crew members could reactivate the engines, the vessel collided with the 'Atlantic Explorer,' a seismographic research ship with 23 personnel onboard, which was en route to Barton-on-Humber. Soon after, both vessels continued drifting and made contact with the 'Celtic Warrior,' carrying a team of nine and transporting scrap glass to Gunness. After the collision, the 'Celtic Spirit' managed to drop anchor and stabilize. The 'Atlantic Explorer' and 'Celtic Warrior' received tugboat assistance, successfully disengaging their anchors by 10:56 a.m. and mooring at Hawke Anchorage. While all three vessels suffered damage, the full extent remains to be assessed. Authorities have suspended pilotage operations until March 3. The 'Celtic Spirit' is slated for repairs at Dunstans Shipyard in Albert Dock, the 'Celtic Warrior' will head towards its discharge point in the River Trent, and the 'Atlantic Explorer' will make its way to Grimsby. The Humber Coastguard is overseeing the situation.
