Fish Farming Vessel Grounds in Tahsis Inlet, Swift Rescue Efforts Underway
On the evening of March 8, 2025, the fish farming vessel 'Ronja Islander' encountered a rocky obstacle while navigating the Tahsis Inlet, sustaining damage that led to water ingress. The incident prompted the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria to spring into action following a distress signal from the vessel. Remarkably, no fish were aboard at the time, alleviating some concerns about environmental impact. In response, the Canadian Coast Guard deployed the CCGS 'Cape Dauphin' along with a speedy rescue craft from the Tahsis lifeboat station to assist the embattled fish carrier. Thanks to proactive measures, the crew effectively utilized the vessel’s pump system to manage the incoming water, while also adjusting the ballast to elevate the compromised section above the waterline. Ultimately, the 'Ronja Islander' successfully navigated the waters back to the West Coast Marine Terminals in Gold River under its own power. The Transportation Safety Board has been informed of the grounding event, and updates were being provided to the MMFN by Grieg Seafood regarding the situation.
