A serious incident unfolded aboard the cargo vessel 'Sea Moon' this morning when a cargo explosion resulted in a crew member being medevaced due to severe burns. The Filipino sailor was injured while the vessel was transporting a coal shipment from New Orleans to Karachi. At approximately 3:05 p.m. on September 28, 2012, the 'Sea Moon' reported via satellite that an explosion had occurred within its cargo hold, leading to a crew member being lost overboard approximately 140 miles southwest of Bermuda. Quick action was taken to deploy a fast rescue boat, successfully recovering the injured crew member. Unfortunately, he sustained full-body burns and required urgent medical attention. In response, the vessel diverted course toward Bermuda for a medical evacuation. Upon inspection of the cargo hold, it was confirmed that there was no fire, the cargo remained stable, and the ship's hull was undamaged. The 'Sea Moon' safely docked in St. David’s at 2:45 a.m. on September 29, where local authorities met the ship, including a doctor. The injured sailor was transported on a stretcher via a pilot boat to Ordnance Island, where an ambulance awaited to take him to the hospital.
