Provisional Repairs Successfully Completed for 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan'
On February 28, 2025, the San Enrique shipyard, located in A Coruña and previously known as Vulcano, announced the successful completion of provisional repairs on the vessel 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan'. This operation was conducted under the direction of Jiangsu Changyang shipyard, which had commissioned San Enrique to perform boilermaking and related work. The need for repairs arose after an unfortunate incident where stowed cranes fell overboard, causing considerable damage to the deck and the starboard side of the ship. Furthermore, part of the cargo that collapsed created debris on the deck, while additional materials were lost in the waters surrounding the dock, particularly in the Ares and Prioriño estuary. Following a series of inspections conducted by the Port Authority of A Coruña, the Chinese Classification Society, and the designated shipowner's representative, it was decided that the remains of the cranes would be removed. A plan for essential repairs was then established to facilitate the ship's temporary navigation to a shipyard for more extensive repairs. After evaluating several proposals, the shipowner selected San Enrique for these provisional repairs. Upon finalizing the contract in mid-February, the shipyard quickly mobilized the necessary personnel, resources, and materials to ensure the work was performed efficiently at the port. No Official Report on Crane Incident Involving 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan', Says Central Government
In a recent statement, the Central Government revealed that no formal documentation has been created regarding the incident involving the cargo vessel 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan' in the waters off Galicia. This assertion emerged from a resolution signed by Gustavo Santana Hernández, the director general of the Merchant Navy, in response to an inquiry made under the Transparency Law. The government clarified that 'there is no record of the preparation of any official report concerning the accident.' Moreover, the response indicated that all communications relating to the maritime event were conducted via telephone, radio, or email among the involved parties, including the ship captain and consignee. The unfortunate occurrence resulted in two sizable cranes plunging into the sea, with one located 80 miles from Cape Ortegal at a staggering depth of 4,700 meters. The second crane rests approximately two miles west of the outer port of Ferrol, at a shallower depth, potentially endangering local fishing operations due to the risk of fishing nets snagging on the submerged debris. The cranes detached from the 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan' on December 6, shortly before 11:00 p.m., while the vessel was navigating off the coast of La Coruña. As of January 16, 2025, the affected ship has remained docked at the port, pending further developments. Heavy Load Carrier 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan' Successfully Moored at Langosteira
On December 17 at approximately 9 a.m., the heavy load carrier 'Shang De Wu Yi Shan' safely docked at Langosteira, the outer port of A Coruña, following a lengthy 11-day period at anchor in the Ares estuary. The arrival was facilitated by the tugs 'Ibáizabal Diez' and 'Ibáizabal Doce', with the ship beginning its journey at 8 a.m. under pilot guidance and equipped with one escort tug. Prior to departure, significant safety measures were implemented, including the removal of the large cranes on board to eliminate the risk of them compromising the ship's stability during transit. The crossing to Langosteira took just over an hour, adhering to safety requirements established by the Maritime Authority of A Coruña. These directives included favorable weather conditions, which predicted light seas and manageable wave heights of 1 to 1.5 meters, as well as good visibility. Upon its arrival and mooring at Langosteira, the vessel will undergo a thorough inspection. This assessment will be more rigorous than previous inspections conducted while in Ares, ensuring compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations before the ship can continue its journey. Significant attention will be given to the hull, which exhibits visible damage above the waterline, determining whether repairs are necessary. Additionally, the recovery of metal structures that were lost approximately 2.2 miles from the outer port of Ferrol in the Ares estuary will need to be addressed, as the situation remains complex with the pieces of the gantry cranes still on deck awaiting resolution.
